Over 95% of the population belong to the Swazi ethnic group, making Swaziland one of Africa's most homogeneous states. It is also one of the most conservative, although it is now coming under pressure from urban-based modernizers. Its political system actively promotes Swazi tradition and is dominated by a powerful monarchy. Society is patriarchal and focused around the clan and chiefs. Both are also politically important. Polygamy is tolerated. Women farm and may vote, but have little economic or political power. The exception is the Queen Mother, the "Great She Elephant," whose influence was demonstrated during the interregnum of the mid-1980s.
